The sun is shining; the birds are chirping; and the weather is getting warmer. The warm weather months are full of a lot of fun things like going to outdoor concerts, watching firework shows, and playing with recreational vehicles or boats. There are also some less than enjoyable tasks that occur during this time of the year such as mowing the lawn and tackling projects on the home to-do list. Regardless of if these tasks are being done for leisure or work, they all have one thing in common: potential for hazardous levels of noise exposure.

With any activity that puts you around high levels of noise, don’t forget to use hearing protection. These products can help reduce the level of noise traveling to the inner-most portion of your ear where the cochlea (the hearing organ) is located. Hair cells in the cochlea respond to sound and stimulate the auditory nerve which sends sound signals to the brain. If the cochlea is exposed to sounds that are too loud or to enough loud noises over time, hearing loss can occur. Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and irreversible.

Don’t worry, just because fireworks and lawn mowers are loud doesn’t mean you have to eliminate these things from your life! There are a variety of hearing protective devices available to help protect your ears during these loud activities. Below are some examples of hearing protective devices:
