Why does my dog love my hearing aid?

Post By: Brianna Rider

Audiologists say it every time they hand out a new hearing aid: keep it away from your dog. Inevitably, people will come back with their tail between their legs (for lack of a better term) because their puppy got a hold of it. This happens all. the. time. Why do pets love hearing aids so much?

Your hearing aids smell like you, of course. They’ll also have cerumen, or earwax, residue on them. Pets love the taste of the earwax--supposedly it’s salty for them, but I’m not sure how that was ever tested or proven. Your hearing aids also emit a high-frequency sound that humans can’t hear when it’s on, and when its microphones are squeezed close, a hearing aid makes a loud squeal. These all make for a fun, tasty, noisy toy for your furry pal.

When not in use, keep your hearing aids off, in their case, and way up high! If your hearing aids fall prey to a pet, be sure to call and schedule an appointment with your audiologist as soon as possible to get it repaired.
